Gorgeous Family? Check, check.
Picture perfect coordinating outfits (no pun intended)? Um….maybe? Finding something to wear shouldn't be THAT hard, right?!! It shouldn't, but it does take some thought and planning. Don't feel as if the entire family has to match, i.e. everyone in jeans and white t-shirts, unless that's the look you're going for. You want a cohesive feel without being overly "matchy-matchy". Think about a page in a clothing catalog where everyone coordinates, however nobody stands out more than the rest.
Light clothes look better on lighter backgrounds and dark clothes look better on darker backgrounds. When in doubt, consult your photographer for suggestions on what to wear. He or she will be able to offer you suggestions and steer you in the right direction. Depending on your skin tone and the location where you'll be photographing some colors may photograph better than others.
With the holidays quickly approaching, fall portraits are definitely on the "to do" list during the next few months. I like to encourage clients to select a base color, either a neutral or muted color and add accent colors; accent colors can be in the accessories, shoes, or tops. A general rule of thumb: earth tones and jewel tones photograph well.
If you're going for a "fall look", try a warmer color palette: reds, oranges & browns, or beiges, neutrals, & greens.
Matching jewel tones with dark blues and grays will give your wardrobe a flattering pop of color among the darker base colors.
Going for a classier look? Coordinating grays, whites / creams and adding a pop of color would create quite the sophisticated look.
And if you live in South Florida like I do, we photograph on the beach all year round! A lighter color palette would compliment the subdued tones of the shore. Try pairing up outfits with beiges, tans, and pastels, and feel free to accent your ensembles with gold or bronze accessories!
These are just a few examples of wardrobes that coordinate well for your portraits. Be sure to check out more examples on my 2014 Fall Style Guide on Pinterest. When selecting your wardrobe for your portrait session, keep in mind to chose clothing that fits well and flatters your body type.
